Rome Education Program

At the recent strategic planning meeting held in December 2006, the Rome Foundation Board initiated a Rome Education Committee with the goal of educating physicians and other healthcare providers about functional GI disorders (FGIDs) using a number of different approaches.

One of the major undertakings the Rome Foundation is currently working on is the development of a Rome III educational slide set which will cover the span of information provided in the Rome III book along with new data from the literature since the Rome III consensus meetings.

We are also planning to sponsor a Rome Lectureship which will be held annually at the Digestive Diseases Week (DDW) meeting. The Rome Board has had formal discussions with the American Gastroenterological Association, which is very supportive of this educational endeavor. The first lecture will take place at DDW 2008 in San Diego, CA. More information about this lectureship will be provided in the near future.

Another educational venture in progress is the development of diagnostic and treatment algorithms for functional GI and motility disorders for clinicians. John Kellow has started to work with Henry Parkman, the President of the American Motility Society, on the construction of these algorithms.

There are several other educational programs in the initial stages of development including reconstruction of the Rome website to provide more educational information to the public and health care professionals. The Rome Foundation is very enthusiastic about increasing awareness of FGIDs through these educational programs and feels that they are some of the most important and rewarding ventures they can offer.
